Jitsu Olympics
Today (Sat 30th Jan) was the Bradford Jitsu Olympics. A yearly event where all the students from across the clubs are invited to take part in a number of events which test their co-ordination, fitness and strength.
Today was also about raising funds for Bradford Jitsu but more importantly some of the proceeds are to go to the Haiti earthquake appeal.
It has been a fantastic turn out with well over 30 different students from across at least 7 different clubs taking part in the event.
The huge turn out means that we have raised £250 for the earthquake appeal and a further £150 which will be used towards new mats for Beckfoot Jitsu Club. This is a fantastic achievement and only made possible by the generosity of all who took part and of course the astonishing effort by the Soren family to organise and prepare the event.
All the students who took part worked hard to win the trophies and everyone tried their best and went home with a medal, the following also won trophies:
Young Samurai Category
- 4th Place = Lorcan
- 3rd Place = Issac
- 2nd Place = Nathaniel
- 1st Place = Fred
Novice to Orange Belt Category
- 4th Place = Bartek
- 3rd Place = Ravi
- 2nd Place = Ned
- 1st Place = Jimmy
Green +
- 4th Place = Robert
- 3rd Place = Suraj
- 2nd Place = Andres
- 1st Place = Oscar
Overall Winner
The overall winner of the Jitsu Olympics this year is Fred with a whopping 330 points, with Oscar coming in second with 250 points and Nathaniel third with 200 points.
Well done to everyone who took part and special thank you to all the parents and adults who helped run the event.

2009 …. What a year it’s been!
What a fantastic year 2009 has been for Bradford Jitsu. Arguably our best ever year since starting 7 years ago!
To round the year off we thought it best to mark the festive period with a summary of our keep successes and above all to say thank you so much for the hard work and dedication put in by everyone who made it such a great year. Particularly to all those who train hard to work through their grades and show real passion and determination to end the year in a better place than when they started.
This year alone we have:
- JANUARY - Setup and opened Beckfoot Jitsu Club which has brought a some fantastic rising stars into our clubs ranging from Young Samurais to even the Adults, tempting some people back to the martial art having been out of action for several years
- APRIL – Baildon Jitsu Club won the overall shield and retained the national title for Judo for the 4th year running
- APRIL – Saw our longest ever camp over the Easter weekend which was so successful we will repeat it again in 2010
- AUGUST – A small group of people went out to the United States to participate in the International Event held in Spartanburg, South Carolina. As well as being fantastic training, we also won the demonstration competition and now hold the International junior title for three years until the next time in Plymouth. Not only that but Sensei Rob Ashcroft got his Black Belt.
- SEPTEMBER – Sensei Graham Williams joins the team as lead instructor for Netherleigh and Rossefield Jitsu Club
- OCTOBER - Setup and opened Thornton Jitsu Club. A huge success from day one, again whilst late on a Friday, this club has attracted Young Samurais, Juniors and Adults all of who are showing real promise !
- OCTOBER – Against all odds, we fought really hard to retain the overall shield and therefore the National Champions title for Junior Atemi Jitsu for the 4th year running.
- NOVEMBER – Sensei Raj Soren flew to South Africa to run his first international grading
- NOVEMBER – The demonstration team, fuelled by their success in the States took their demo and showcased it at the first round of auditions for Britain’s Got Talent in Manchester. The results of which are unknown but fingers crossed we should find out in the early part of 2010
- NOVEMBER – Sensei Phil Jeminson joins the team as lead instructor for Lady Lane Jitsu Club
- DECEMBER – To celebrate the year end we held our BIGGEST ever awards evening at Beckfoot School, at which everyone surpassed themselves by bringing a Monmouth variety of food, not to mention the Dance moves.
- DECEMBER – Whilst we can’t take credit for this one, it is still definitely worth its own mention, Rachel Smith one of our lead instructors, gave birth to a lovely healthy baby girl called Olivia. Massive Congratulations to Rachel and her partner Richard !
If that wasn’t enough, we have seen so many new grades and progress this year, in particular Suraj Soren who together with Tom Claridge now holds the Senior Primary grade at a Junior Level as demonstrated by his black badge. What’s extra special about this is there have only ever been three awarded at a Junior Level and now there are only two practicing Juniors at this level both are at Baildon Jitsu Club.
Let’s not also forget that Chandni Soren her Hackama and therefore joined Tom and Suraj as part of our Junior Instructor team in Bradford Jitsu and is only one in a handful of practicing juniors to hold such a grade in the UK!
